A literary-gothic walk through Providence's shadow-side \u2014 the city that made H.P. Lovecraft and drew Edgar Allan Poe. From the John Hay Library (Lovecraft's papers and three human-skin-bound books) and his relocated house, to the Prospect Terrace overlook that gave him his epitaph 'I am Providence,' down Benefit Street past Sarah Helen Whitman's house (Poe's doomed 1848 romance) and the real 'Shunned House,' to the Providence Athenaeum, and a pilgrimage coda to Lovecraft's grave at Swan Point. Lovecraft's influence is celebrated and his documented racism named honestly.
